Mount Spurr eruption less likely, but experts urge Alaskans to stay prepared

Experts continue to keep a close eye on Mount Spurr, and while the outlook is improving, they say it’s still important for Alaskans to stay alert and prepared.

The Alaska Volcano Observatory announced this week that an eruption at Mount Spurr now appears less likely. But scientists stress—it’s not off the table.

Mount Spurr remains at yellow alert level, meaning the volcano is still showing signs of unrest and is being actively monitored.

“The color code remains at yellow, and the alert level is advisory. So it still makes a lot of sense to prepare—have these items, in addition to the basic kits that we would have—since we live in such an active state,” explained Matt Haney with the Alaska Volcano Observatory.

So what does that mean for the rest of us?

The bottom line: the situation is improving, but caution is still advised. If you’ve purchased masks or air filters recently, experts suggest keeping them handy.

Since the initial warning, our team has been covering how to protect your home, pets, and vehicles in the event of an eruption.
