One of the league's top cornerbacks is now officially available on the open market, as the Green Bay Packers are releasing All-Pro Jaire Alexander after seven seasons with the team. The former first-round pick from Louisville is expected to draw significant interest from teams in need of help in the secondary.
Among those teams looking for cornerback assistance are the New Orleans Saints. After parting ways with both Marshon Lattimore and Paulson Adebo in the past eight months, the Saints have a glaring need at the position. They made a strong push for then-Colts cornerback Charvarius Ward earlier in free agency, but ultimately lost the bidding war for his services, settling for Isaac Yiadom, his teammate.
In the draft, cornerback remained a top priority for New Orleans, but they failed to land one early, instead securing a value pick in the later rounds with Louisville’s Quincey Riley. To further address the need, the Saints brought in former Chargers cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. for a visit, though his future remains uncertain due to a neck injury that kept him sidelined for much of last season. Speculation has also been ongoing about a potential trade for Dolphins cornerback Jalen Ramsey, who has ties to new defensive coordinator Brandon Staley.
Now, with Alexander on the market, the Saints have another high-end option to consider. At just 28 years old, Alexander remains in his prime and possesses elite traits at the position. However, like Lattimore, availability has been a concern for Alexander, as he has appeared in only 14 games over the past two seasons, raising doubts about his durability.
That said, if healthy, Alexander could be a perfect fit in Staley’s system. He’s an aggressive, twitchy zone corner who consistently plays bigger than his frame suggests. With approximately $28.7 million in cap space, the Saints are in a good financial position to compete for his services. A defense in transition could significantly benefit from the addition of a premier cornerback.
The big question now is: how aggressive will the Saints be in pursuing this opportunity?
